Spain

In 1978, the Spanish constitution outlined healthcare protection as among the rights of citizens, leading to the formation of a single-payer healthcare system that provides universal coverage. Spain’s national health system, which is ranked 7th in the world by the World Health Organization, is financed by income taxation, and administration is provided through regional governments. Patients must receive a referral from a gatekeeper in order to receive specialized care.

There is a high level of activity in terms of cocaine trafficking in Spain, the abundance of which has led to lower prices and higher rates of use. The use of cannabis has also increased in recent years. Spain’s drug policy has been growing increasingly more restrictive over the past decade, focusing on harm reduction.

NIDA INVEST Fellowships at ISAP

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship aims to provide drug abuse scientists from across the globe with rigorous postdoctoral research training and professional development activities at a U.S. institution. The program is geared to allow fellows to establish personal relationships with NIDA grantees and NIDA officials who will continue their mentorship activities beyond the 12-month period. Fellows and mentors jointly seek funding and foster grant-writing abilities in order to enable collaborative research projects conducted in the fellow's home country. Previously, fellows have conducted research on drug abuse and addiction in a variety of areas, including epidemiology, prevention, treatment, and preclinical and clinical studies.
