Dr. Khurana currently works as a Senior Economist at UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs’ Evaluation Division. He serves as a co-principal investigator and co-investigator of multiple studies, including evaluating California’s Organized Delivery System waiver for substance use disorder services. He works on evaluating the impact of Proposition 64, which legalized the use of recreational marijuana in CA, studying stigma against People Experiencing Homelessness (PEH), and LGBTQ+ individuals using data from various social media platforms. Dr. Khurana’s research interests lie at the intersection of integrating Social Determinants of Health with SUD treatment and prevention. His concurrent work focuses on improving routine primary care delivery for low-income patients, including studying the impact of incorporating Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), designing, and evaluating interventions to promote diversity, equity, and inclusiveness in primary care delivery, especially for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ patients. Dr. Khurana is also affiliated with the Weill Cornell Medicine Center for Health Economics of Treatment Interventions for Substance use disorders, Hepatitis C Virus [HCV], and HIV, Committee on the Status of LGBTQ+ in the Economics Profession at the American Economic Association, Comparative Effectiveness and Clinical Outcomes Research Center at Riverside University Health System-Medical Center, UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative. His formal training in Behavioral Economics equips him with the tools to design and implement interventions effectively. At the same time, his experience as a Health Economist allows him to evaluate the impact of such interventions. Owing to his diverse experience, Dr. Khurana was recognized as a "Diversity Scholar" by the American Society of Health Economists (ASHE) in 2020. He received a Ph.D. in Economics, an M.A. in Economics from Claremont Graduate University, and an M.S. in Finance from the London School of Economics.
