Changing Minds, Changing Systems: Promoting Compassionate Care for Opioid Use Disorder and HIV

Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center and Pacific Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center Collaborative Training Package

Negative attitudes and perceptions toward people who use alcohol and drugs and/or people with HIV can create structural and clinical barriers that impact engagement in care. The fear of judgment associated with talking about and seeking help for HIV and/or a substance use disorder can discourage someone from engaging in available treatment and recovery services. This training workshop will address strategies for open, judgment-free conversations that promote mutual understanding and respect, thereby increasing treatment engagement and success. Participants will engage in discussion about how to decrease negative bias and increase engagement in their programs and communities.

The duration of the training is approximately 180 minutes (3 hours), depending on whether the trainer chooses to present all the slides, or a selection of slides.

This training package is the latest in a series of curricula focused on the intersection of HIV and opioids. Previously training packages developed by the PAETC/PSATTC collaboration include: Prescription Opioids 101: What HIV Clinicians Need to Know (2011); Heroin and HIV: What Clinicians Need to Know (2015); and Heroin, Prescription Opioids, and HIV: What Clinicians Need to Know (2018).
