Following the implementation of a comprehensive reform package in 2006, universal medical care coverage in the Netherlands has been achieved through an insurance market that is patient-focused and competitive. Thus, although the government regulates the system, patient demand determines the quality of care.

Most notably, the Netherlands is considered a hub of ecstasy production and the Dutch government has successfully been taking measures to reduce production and trafficking. Additionally, as a result of the rising rates of overdose due to GHB, an illegal liquid drug that is similar to ecstasy in its tendency to produce euphoria and sociability, actions are being taken by the Dutch government to reduce the designer drug’s rapidly increasing use.

NIDA INVEST Fellowships at ISAP

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) INVEST Drug Abuse Research Fellowship aims to provide drug abuse scientists from across the globe with rigorous postdoctoral research training and professional development activities at a U.S. institution. The program is geared to allow fellows to establish personal relationships with NIDA grantees and NIDA officials who will continue their mentorship activities beyond the 12-month period. Fellows and mentors jointly seek funding and foster grant-writing abilities in order to enable collaborative research projects conducted in the fellow's home country. Previously, fellows have conducted research on drug abuse and addiction in a variety of areas, including epidemiology, prevention, treatment, and preclinical and clinical studies.
